How do I get a duplicate title in Illinois?

Instructions on obtaining a duplicate Illinois (IL) title

Illinois utilizes electronic titles. If your title is electronic, you will need to obtain a physical copy prior to pickup.

If the vehicle was last titled in Illinois

  1. Download and fill out the Illinois Duplicate Title Application
    • You may obtain title and registration applications online, by visiting the nearest Secretary of State facility, or by calling (800) 252-8980
  2. Submit the application
    1. In person at the Secretary of State Facility
      1. Time frame: 4-6 weeks
      2. Cost to obtain: $50 (expedited printing for an additional $30)
    2. By mailing the application to:
      Office of the Secretary of State
      Vehicle Records Processing Division
      501 S. 2nd. St., Room 424
      Springfield, IL 62756-6666
      1. Time frame: 4-6 weeks
      2. Cost to obtain: $50

If the vehicle was last titled outside of Illinois

The registered titled owner(s) of the vehicle must apply for a duplicate title through the state in which the vehicle was last titled.
