How do I get a duplicate title in Michigan?

Instructions on obtaining a duplicate Michigan (MI) title

Michigan utilizes electronic titles. If your title is electronic, you will need to obtain a physical copy prior to pickup.

If the vehicle was last titled in Michigan

  1. Download and fill out the Michigan Duplicate Title Application
  2. Submit the application
    1. Online at the Department of State
      1. Time frame: 14 days
      2. Cost to obtain: $15
    2. In person at the Department of State
      1. Time frame: Same day (select locations) - 4 weeks
      2. Cost to obtain: $15 + $5 same-day fee
    3. By mailing the application to:

      1. Time frame: 14 days
      2. Cost to obtain: $15
        Note: Mail-in applications are only available for out-of-state residents.

If the vehicle was last titled outside of Michigan

The registered titled owner(s) of the vehicle must apply for a duplicate title through the state in which the vehicle was last titled.
